May16th - June14th 2009

Two Galleries get together, L'Esprit Tribal with it's items and Artidec presenting 5contemporary artists, inspired by the Oceanic art . The result is a very suggestive exhibition,Oceanic Art together with Contemporary Art, a combination presented for the first time in Italy in Bracciano near Rome.Three painters, Paola Cordischi, Leena Knuuttila and Massimo Melloni ,a ceramist Mirna Manni and a photographer Nico Marziali show their work in symbiosis withmasks and ancestor figures, objects of magic power and ritual use, various ornaments "from far " -BILONG LONGWE-, in the native pidgin language. This exhibition title is a free translation from the Italian poet Franco Loi's "da lontano", (from far),giving an interesting, soft and dreamlike approach to the whole exhibition.

The pieces of Oceanic art proposed by the L'Esprit Tribal Gallery are mostly made during the early and mid 20th century, work of "anonymous artists ", native people from Papua New Guinea, Bismarck archipelago and District of Massim with their different languages, uses, forms and colours. The isolation and wide range of environmental conditions of these people led to the development of a rich variety of artistic styles. Artefacts were not considered "art", but objects created for ceremonies and rites during their life. Religious myths for headhunting, fertility or in remember of the ancestor; this is the real soul of the Oceanic Art. It tells us of it's people; exciting, wonderful art from a part of the world so "FAR AWAY - "BILONG LONGWE". Timeless works of art that have been transforming the concept of contemporary art since the first pieces arrived in Europe around 1890-1900, inspiring several world famous artists.
